MYP 1

The MYP 1 students finally completed their autobiographies – although the writing was done a while ago, the students were working on the layout of their books – and they know have their own colour copies!

‘I think the final product of my autobiography was really good. I didn’t expect it to be so good. The pages were right so it looked like a real book and the pictures were in good condition (colour). However, there were some errors. In the contents I missed one chapter. Also in some of my stories there were grammatical mistakes for example two ‘ands’. Maybe next time when I have the opportunity to do it once again, I should look over my writing over and over again so that it is perfect.’ (Hyoungmin)

‘When I saw my autobiography I was positively surprised! I really liked ‘The time I Got In Trouble’ story. I learned a lot during this unit.’ (Jaqueline)

‘I worked on my autobiography for about 1 month. In this unit I had to write a lot about myself so it was kind of hard but now I like this. I like the story, blurb and introduction, but I think I could fix some words to interesting words.’ (Jun Soo)

‘This unit was my favourite unit because we could write about everything we wanted to write about. I also liked this unit because we could put sill pictures of ourselves when we were small. But my favourite thing from the whole book unit was that we could add pictures, colours and all those details.’ (Amelia)
‘I liked writing what happened in my life. I had a good understanding but I also think I need to develop something more, for example punctuation and use more similes and synonyms. However, I’m glad I could share my stories with others.’ (Sae Rim)

MYP 2

The students have started on their final assignment for the joint Art, DT and Language A unit ‘In search of adventure’. They will write their own adventure story, then they will create a trailer for the movie version of their story and create a storyboard. Finally they will then create the trailer and demonstrate filming and movie editing skills.

MYP 3

The MYP 3 students presented their persuasive speeches at the middle school assembly on Thursday 29th May. During the unit, the students looked at a variety of speeches or extracts of speeches in order to determine what makes a good speech; how should a speech be organized? How can we persuade our audience? How can we make sure we sound convincing and what literary tools we can use to make our arguments stronger?
The students then chose a topic that they have strong views on and tried to apply what they learned to write their own speech. They are being assessed on their written speech and their presentation skills. The topics they chose were: Don’t Buy Luxury Goods, Dog Abuse Needs to Stop, Racism, Planting Trees, Feed the People, Global warming and Cheating in football.

I will upload some pictures to my wiki page soon!

MYP 4/5

We are coming to the end of our Perspectives unit and the students are now working on a research essay on a controversial topic of their choice. They have been practicing the skills of evaluating sources and using internal citations correctly. These skills will be important for the MYP 5 personal project next year and the extended essay which is the culminating task of the Diploma Programme.

It was Jeopardy week in World Studies in preparation for our unit tests. In pairs, students created questions connected to the main topics of their current units, then put them into a Jeopardy quiz show format and played the game as review for the test. Chocolates were given for correct responses and the team with the most money at the end of the game got gummi bears!

MYP 4/5
On Thursday Grade 9/10 played a real nail-biter while reviewing for their test on the origins of the Cold War. Hania and Oliver took home the bears by answering correctly this clue:

This US plan offered 17 billion dollars in aid to help post-war European countries rebuild their economies

MYP 3
On Wednesday Grade 8 played in preparation for their unit test on the Bolshevik Revolution. Dhaya and Jure won the bears with $3500.

Mathematics

MYP 1

Sae Rim:

This unit was called ‘Area, perimter and length’ and ‘Angles’. Angles was pretty hard but I got full mark on the test. For 2nd assessment we were divided into groups and had to made a video. Video was about many different kinds of angles. ‘Area, perimeter and length’ is about how to find area and perimeter. Also for assessment we had to paint our mathroom.

Jaqueline:

I really liked to do our videos. It was very fun to work with my group. I learned a lot while doing the videos. The videos is our final assessment. In our next unit, we learned about perimeter and area. I really liked this unit. I also likedour painting classroom task. Overall I learned a lot during this unit.

Hyoungmin:

In this unit we learned about angles, length, area and perimeter. For the angles unit we made a video. Everybody excpet me came out well. It was hard because we had some technologyproblems for example the computers.

Amelia:

In this unit we learned about area, perimeter etc. I did not like this unit because I did not really get it and if I did get something it was the perimeter which was the eaasiest. You just had to plus everything around. In the second unit I liked the movies about angles. I liked it because it was funny.

Jun - Soo:

Area unit was good and I learned a lot of things. Angle unit was my favorite one. Acute angle, straight angle, right angle. It was also fun to make videos. I think area was a little bit more difficult to me. Still fun. I especially liked angle unit.

MYP 2

Peter:

In this unit we have been learning about graphs and i have found it very interesting. This unit came easily to me. I had fun doing it. I think i liked it because it had to do with teamwork. What was the funnest part about it was when we went to the playground and me and Sim got to spin around. Remembering the names of the graphs was hard for me. But i was able to understand and identify the graphs well. But of course there’s always a hard part to a unit

Simphiwe:

In math we have been learning about decimals and percentages. We have also have been learning about graphs. The thing that I liked was the graphs because it was fun to go outside and walk around making graphs. I didn’t really like percentages because we didn’t do anything fun.

MYP 3

Kristian:

This unit was interesting. I liked how we got to interact with people for educational reasons. It also made us more "happy" to actually do work. We learned about statistics and graphs and it was sort of interesting. I enjoyed this unit and hope we will get to interact with people for projects like that more often.

Chiharu:

In this unit, we learned about statistics. It was new for me, but it wasn’t hard at all.
We learned about Gradient and Y-intercept. And we made an equation of the lines. Then we learned how to make a parallel line and perpendicular line.
I didn't like it, because we were just drawing lines, but I think I will use it in the future.

Yeon Soo:

Survey unit was very interesting to me. I could practice “how to communicate with the other people.” It helps me “how to understand the people, and why we should understand them.”
I wasn’t that sure how to make survey more specific. “How can I make it more succinct.” And “what kind of chart should I use.” But I figure it out, and I get it how to make the charts.
Graphing relations - this was quite fun, because I could understand pretty well. Actually I want to study this unit more deeply, but we don’t have much time. So It was inconvenient to me.

Dhaya:

This month was really full of learning in math. We completed 3 units! We learned about statistics, probability and graphing relations. In the statistics unit, I learned about mean, mode and median. I also learned how to create and analyze surveys. The probability unit was very short. I learned how explain the probability of an event through math. The graphing relations unit was very interesting. I learned to use coordinate planes to graph things. Anyway, this month I think we achieved a lot.

MYP 4

Jimin:

In this month, we had been learning a unit called Coordinate Geometry. I think this unit was really important for me because this unit will also be continued in next year. Since it’s an important unit for me, I tried more than other units but I still found some difficulties in this unit. I worked on a brief slide investigation with Shivangi which was kind of connected with trigonometry. We had to find some coordinate equations etc. I feel dissatisfied with my first investigation in this unit because I could find any patterns so I got really low mark but when I tried the second investigation, I got much better mark for it. I did everything right but my communication skill was not clear but I am satisfied with the work because at least it shows my improvement in the investigation of this unit and the test went okay, I actually missed some easy parts but I think I can do better for next year. The unit which we are learning now is called Statistics and Probability. We also did this unit last year but we went over new things briefly. It wasn’t that hard but some questions were quite confused but I was interested in the gapminder project. Gapminder shows the general rates of each categories in each countries so I felt that I was also learning about some facts for countries.

Shivangi:

The unit that we had was coordinate geometry, and the unit that we are doing now is statistics and probability. In the unit of coordinate geometry I got to learn about how to find formulas for parallel and perpendicular lines. I found learning about finding the formula for parallel and perpendicular lines kind of difficult and complicated. The thing that I enjoyed doing in the coordinate geometry unit was the assignment in which I worked with Jimin because that was the easiest assignment we did in that unit. Now in statistics and probability I learnt about different types of graphs which was quite interesting. Now we are doing a final project for this unit which is gapminder project in which we are looking at different types of graphs and answering questions related to the graph.

Oliver:

This month on math we finished coordinate geometry. We started data and probability. I have learned new stuff like graphing data. I learned how to use gapminder. That we are currently finishing an assignment on. It is quite complicated because there is lots of stuff to learn. Overall it was a hard and busy month.

MYP 5

Alexander:

This month we have learned about data and probability. I learned how to use such sites as gapminder, and how to analyze and read data and statistics. I must admit that this unit gave me a much greater understanding of statistics and probability, and it has also widened my viewpoint on the subject quite greatly.

Middle School Art

In MYP 1 we are engaged in a project about expressionism: everyone has contributed to a piece based on Picasso's Guernica. It's really shaping up, just needs some finishing touches...
In MYP 2 we are working on a big, big project whose final product will be a film trailer for an exciting adventure movie. Sim and Peter could well turn out to be the next Steven Spielbergs. They are finishing the stories and scripts and are about to start on the storyboard.
In MYP 3 students are engaged in a unit on portraiture. They have been learning a variety of techniques and are about to start their final works- 3 portraits, 3 people, 3 techniques.
In MYP 4 and 5 students have already made some great images as part of their street art research, including some graffiti tags and iconic tshirt designs. Coming up next...the real thing. So bring your spray paints after green school!
